Your dog will not know the difference between your possessions and his without the proper training. If you have problems with inappropriate chewing and ineffective potty training, you must work at training your dog correctly. The following article contains some tips you can use to help make your dog well-behaved.

Reinforce positive behaviors as you train your pet. Instead of punishing him when he is bad, simply do not reward that behavior. Enforcing negatively may cause your dog to fear you. Positive reinforcement is the best way to go and gain the trust of your dog.

You should keep doggy treats handy for rewarding your dog. It is important for your pet to understand that you have certain expectations, what those expectations are, and that he will be rewarded for complying. Doing so makes your dog learn what he can and can’t do.

If your dog leaps on you, hold his paws and squeeze them a little so he will know this is not acceptable. Do something that makes them uncomfortable so that they can associate their action with something negative. If you do this, they will not jump up on your or visitors any longer because they will think about you squeezing their paws.

When training your pet, you must be patient. Dogs, like people, learn in different ways at different speeds. Quick dogs and slow dogs are both still fundamentally good dogs. You need to practice patience when you are training your dog.

Keep in mind that older dogs have limitations. You will be unable to train an older dog perfectly; embrace their personality and quirks! A dog in his senior years may not be as receptive to changes and new behaviors. Though you might be able to teach them a few new things, it may make more sense to pick just a few areas to improve and just deal with the rest.

Use the ‘shake-can’ trick when training your dog. Take an empty can of soda, place some spare change in it, and seal it up. Whenever the dog acts badly, shake the can. Your dog will be startled and it will alter his behavior. Once you have done this, your dog will understand that what he is doing is unacceptable. Be sure to shake the can only once, Doing it multiple times could desensitize your dog.

Maintain brief training sessions. Since dogs do not have a long attention span, short lessons will prevent them from getting bored. If you want a long session, make sure that your dog has a break in between.

In the beginning, give your dog a food treat each time it successfully obeys a command. After awhile, you should begin to taper off on the treats and switch to praise as the most commonly used reward.

Do the proper research to determine whether your dog’s breed fits in your training routine. Some breeds are a bit more stubborn and need even more patience from you. There are several dog breeds that need your patience when training, and basset hounds and bulldogs are just two such breeds.

Successful dog training for walks means being aware of any dogs or other animals you will encounter while walking. You have no idea how well trained the other dog is. If you see a dog acting aggressively or fearfully, avoid that dog.

If you ever use your dog’s individual name in a warning mode or tone, make sure that you complement that with three or four positive uses too. This ensures your dog doesn’t associate his name with punishments, meaning he’ll come when you call him in future.

It might be hard to make your dog an inside dog. Your possessions are being destroyed, and you are losing patience. The steps provided by this article will help you teach your dog to behave indoors.
